Ludion : Jacquie Maria Wessels : Garage Stills & Fringe Nature

Preview

Ludion publishes the book Garage Stills & Fringe Nature by photographer Jacquie Maria Wessels.

For this project, Wessels traveled the world, guided by her fascination for the fabulous world of traditional garages. In amazing garages, notably in Cambodia, Cuba or Japan, she creates poetic still lifes with intriguing and personal objects found on site. It is the shapes and colors of these mysterious objects that attract her attention. Wessels then directs her camera outside: in the immediate vicinity of the garages, she is struck by the persistence of nature in the harsh industrial landscapes on the outskirts of cities. In some cases, lush vegetation even takes over and invades garages.

Wessels’ analog photos are painterly images, as surprising in their color palette as in their lighting. Moreover, they testify to the disappearance of an essentially masculine world, gradually supplanted by new sterile technologies.

Jacquie Maria Wessels (1959) studied photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and social psychology at the Vrije Universiteit, both in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Her autonomous work is related to documentary photography and is often the result of a long immersion in a determined subject.
