Lights. Fictions.

Preview

As part of the Photo Brussels Festival and its “City” theme, Atelier Relief presents the  collective exhibition Lumières. Fiction. with Simon Brodbeck & Lucie de Barbuat, Alain Cornu, Frank Herfort, Thomas Lang and Diane Moulenc. Reunited by their aesthetic and narrative approach to the city, all play with color and light and initiate fictions in suspension.

Here, no city is fully represented. Brussels, Moscow, Paris, these urban universes are glimpsed in fragments, never in their entirety. What prevails here is not the vision of a city, the urban reportage or the stroll. At the turn of the day, from the well worn pavement, familiar streets, arise rather a gesture, a radiance, a ray. Lights and colors give the tempo to the imagination, emphasize the beauty present in the ordinary. In their works the following story is whispered. The imagination floats out of frame. Beginning a photographic story and leaving it as it is, vacant, with no other words than the image, here is their address.

By taking the sculptural form of a relief, these photographs reveal the anguishes, the mysteries, the trivial dramas and the little things of the cities. If colors and lights form the triggering moment, the relief is disruptive. It halos or masks surprise, plays with forms and gives these scenes a sculptural materiality. By giving it volume, it makes dramatic photography subtle. In the service of narration, the relief pays tribute to its storytellers. With them, photography looks like a breathless suspense. Lights. Fictions. Silence.
