The hidden exhibition of Canadian photographer Kourtney Roy

Preview

Currently the lawyers Martin & Associés are showing a series of photographs by Kourtney Roy on their premises. Members of the public cannot enter and so today they are only visible to the readers of L’Œil.

How did this project around Kourtney Roy’s recent works come about?

The exhibition of the French-Canadian photographer Kourtney Roy in collaboration with the Galerie Catherine et André Hug is the outcome of the first year of partnership with the PhotoSaintGermain festival. A new adventure that came out of a meeting with Virginie Huet and Aurélia Marcadier, the two bubbly and talented directors of the festival, during the exhibition of Laurent Champoussin’s work in our premises.

The reciprocal enthusiasm that we shared at the time of the 2016 PhotoSaintGermain festival simply made us want to programme an event at the time of the Paris Photo Month “beyond the fringe” in association with a partner gallery.

Then we had the opportunity to see Kourtney Roy’s recent work. Her self-portraits let us dive into an imaginary time, as if suspended between traces of a past that we regret seeing disappear and a sometimes disconcerting contemporary presence, that presupposes memory but also transition. A real poetic force not devoid of humour that sends us back to our presence in today’s world. What could be more topical?
