The constitution of a photographic heritage is not simply the mechanical recording of symbols of a time period. Today, what we see as an objective vision of the world or as fiction, photography responds more than ever, from analog to digital, to the demands of creation and poses the question of the conservation and transference of a heritage.
Since 1990, the Centre Méditerranéen de la Photographie has been establishing a collection of several dozens of photographic works made by photographers with different styles and origins that participate in the enrichment of Corsica’s heritage, attained through orders, donations, and acquisitions. No less than 950 works constitute the Centre Méditerranéen de la Photographie’s collection today.
Portraits de femmes, Ritratti di donne presents one of these aspects. Whether it be documentary, photo-journalistic, or artistic, by means of quirky or more classic visions, the photographs making up this exhibition try hard to highlight a diversity of views. It is about focusing on aesthetic fields that constitute a collection, but also about showing that these different photographic attitudes participate in the construction of the view. Each portrait, from daguerrotype to digital photography, brings something to think about, a question or testimony about the place of women in society, whether they be from the West or the East. The viewer will see, one right next to the other, poetic, sensitive photographs and even striking accounts of women in the world, photographed by forty photographers.
