Les Perles du Beau Livre, which rewards the most beautiful books of the year, distinguished this year The Unseen Saul Leiter published by Textuel editions.
Very much ahead of his time, Saul Leiter invested in coloured slides starting in 1948 as an artistic medium in its own right, through projections that he organized. This book brings together 76 unpublished images, selected from the photographer’s archives. The choice fell on works related to street photography, underlining its extreme singularity, contrary to the codes of documentary reporting.
Saul Leiter made most of these images between 1948 and 1966, walking the streets of Downtown Manhattan in New York, capturing the magic and mystery of ordinary settings. Almost sixty years later, his delicacy, between abstraction and figuration, places him among the greatest. Deeply avant-garde, the late recognition of Saul Leiter is now exploding.
Saul Leiter is considered one of the pioneers of color photography. Already published by Textuel All About Saul Leiter (2018) and Forever Saul Leiter (2021).
