Christian Bourcart is exhibiting Carnets new-yorkais at the gallery Les Filles du Calvaire until November 30th, an eponymous book is published by Atelier EXB. On November 15th, the opening of the exhibition «La vie est un rêve et les images en sont la preuve» took place at the Nicéphore Niépce museum in Chalon sur Saône.
In 2020, the photographer bequeathed his archives to the Nicéphore-Niépce museum. Among this collection, 48 research notebooks composed of 10 × 15 prints arranged in plates, which reveal the formal concerns of the author in their constancy and their variations. This “typological atlas” immerses us in Bourcart’s visual universe by linking his most famous series in the flow of general production. Anonymous suburbs, ruins of the Wall Trade Center, swingers’ clubs, urban wanderings… Bourcart photographs crowds, solitude, traces of activity; he tracks and questions our presence in the world, aware that photography is a fiction based on the reality of life. Designed as a facsimile of the original notebooks, this “atlas”, with its flow of more than 300 images, takes us into the imagination of the photographer, revealing his obsessions, his recurrences and his fascination with the decompartmentalization of forms of representation.
