Les Douches la Galerie pays tribute to Marvin E. Newman.
Marvin E. Newman, who died on September 13, 2023, photographed everything with great joy: from street reporting to advertising or sports commissions, including nightlife and fashion. Les Douches la Galerie, which presented his first personal exhibition in France in 2018, wanted to pay tribute to him, a few months after his death, with this exhibition of photographs taken in color, mainly in New York. This city, where he was born in 1927, was undoubtedly one of his favorite playgrounds, along with Chicago, where he had settled to study, between 1949 and 1952, at the Institute of Design ( ID), alongside Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. A curious man, open to the world, never taking himself seriously, Marvin E. Newman was above all a storyteller. Through his work, the history of American photography from the post-war period to the present day unfolds before our eyes.
