The Fringe and the Mainstream – Tiane Doan na Champassak
His self-published books put him on the fringe. But his 3 new books coming out this semester by Mörel Books, Post and Dienacht Publishing—and another in the works with Steidl—put him in the mainstream. His photographs, presented by the East Wing gallery, were selected by David Lynch for a special feature at Paris Photo. Clément Kauter will exhibit 25 of them in October at Plac’Art, where he recently co-founded the group AM Projects, whose first book will be available at the Unseen Photo Fair in September.
At Le Bal Gallery in August—an excellent month for alternative photography—I asked him to autograph The Father of Pop Dance.I had planned to ask a question about the origins of this unidentified photographic object, and another about The King of Photography, and yet another about Looters—which Martin Parr selected to feature during his exhibition at the Jeu de Paume—not to mention questions about Showroom, Spleen and Ideal, about his photography, Baudelairean in its attempt to extract beauty from Evil, about his quasi-romantic encounters with people in the photography world, and about his refreshing vision of publishing. What else?
Tiane Doan na Champassak was born in 1973 and is represented by the Agence VU’, Kahmann Gallery, and Eastwing.
