Laurent Millet, the astrophile

Preview

Galerie Particulière in Paris is exhibiting the images both scientific and poetic of the photographer who received the Niépce Award in 2015.

At the edge of deserted spaces, on the verge of where the void draws everything that man could possibly do to try to exist, a figure and installations of unclear appearance face us. Scraps from architecture, observatories, and measuring devices create an enigmatic theatre. The single machines question space with the human interpreter in an encounter where photography assures the conditions and purpose. The objects deconstruct space, give distance, and contribute to constructing a unique landscape, both dramatized and real, thanks to the miracle of photography. Thus, Laurent Miller drifts in a scientific imaginary world. A sort of melody is carried out before these backgrounds which is well-explained by the Austrian writer Rainer Maria Rilke: “It’s far out, in these brilliant backgrounds, where we feel fulfilled. Theyre there, action and will. Thats where stories of which we are the obscure titles take place. Thats where our agreements, our goodbyes, consolations, and mourning take place. Thats where we are, while in the foreground we come and go.

Lauren Millet is also a fan of the cyanomètre. Inspired by an instrument invented by Saussure in the 18th century which was meant to measure the blue of the sky, this new variant combines this old instrument with photographic chemistry. The inked blue used by Saussure is replaced by the blue of the cyanotype, whose conditions are linked to the light to measure color and intensity. Another image is also presented on the same sheet of paper: a digital, black and white print showing the elaboration of a drawing of ellipses. In a distanced manner, these recall the relationship of stars and the representation of the curve of their movements. The color chart constitutes a coherent ensemble, even if the images comprising it could be viewed in an autonomous manner.
