La Martinière : Nikos Aliagas : Le Spleen d’Ulysse

Preview

Éditions de La Martinière presents the release on June 9 of the new book by Nikos Aliagas: Le Spleen d’Ulysse. This book of photographs explores the myth of the contemporary hero, who, like Ulysses, becomes a man by facing adversity.

Guided by Homer’s Odyssey, Nikos Aliagas explores the myth in photographs of the contemporary hero who, like Ulysses, becomes man by confronting adversity. His black and white images speak of melancholy, wandering, the harshness of ordeals, the pain of leaving and the uncertain return, metamorphosis and acceptance of self. In a geographic and introspective journey, Nikos Aliagas sketches with sensitivity the pangs and the beauty of existence.

“These images are the fruit of several years of travels and quests, a correspondence book that is both imaginary and real. The traveler’s nostalgia does not capitulate, it suggests pause while fleeing the pose. The spleen of Ulysses is a silent song, no need to understand the language to understand it“ says the artist.

An exhibition of photographs by Nikos Aliagas will be held from June to October 2023 at the Abbaye de Jumièges.

Nikos Aliagas, journalist and TV and radio host, is also a passionate photographer. Working exclusively in black and white, Nikos Aliagas casts a benevolent and humane gaze on his surroundings, attaching himself to the hands, to the faces on which the years have passed, capturing snapshots of life or landscapes animated by games of light and shadow. His photographs are regularly the subject of exhibitions in France (La Grande Arche de La Défense, the Conciergerie in Paris, DIDAM in Bayonne, Christie’s…) and abroad (Belgium, Switzerland, Greece, Italy…). He has already published a monographic book L’Épreuve du temps in 2018 with Éditions de La Martinière.
