La Filature, in Mulhouse pays tribute to Olivier Metzger through an exhibition dedicated to the photographer born in Mulhouse in 1973 who died in a road accident in November 2022.
A graduate of ENSP Arles in 2004, Olivier Metzger was quickly sought after by numerous editorial staff for his portraits with their unique dramaturgy. His style was distinguished for its complex lighting, enigmatic decorations and a melancholy atmosphere. A photographer of the strange, Olivier Metzger sought in the light what it could reveal about hidden things, like David Lynch who made the Smile (Forever) series his favorite at Paris Photo in 2012. In May 2022, Olivier Metzger was hosted in residence in Soorts-Hossegor to create Sodium, a photographic archive of the Landes at night. He continued this research on city lighting at night with his series Aux Lumières de la ville as part of a major national commission financed by the Ministry of Culture and managed by the BnF. We remain today with his images and the memory of an inspired and demanding photographer who was one of the best forces of his generation.
The photographs in the series Aux Lumières de la ville were produced as part of the major national commission “Radioscopy of France: views on a country going through the health crisis” financed by the Ministry of Culture and managed by the BnF. The photographs in the Sodium series were produced as part of the photographer’s residency in Soorts-Hossegor at the invitation of Erwan Desplanques and Constance de Buor (Third Session gallery).
