L’Une et L’Autre presents the work of fifteen women brought together for a series of workshops organized by the association 100 Voix! in 2012. They had all experienced difficult times in their lives, from sickness, death and betrayal to violence, rape, exile and imprisonment.
The workshop focused on the question of identity, as seen through the eyes of The Other, and introspection. This dual process led to the part of the exhibition “Rencontres” (Meetings).
First, the photographer Sarah Moon took a series of portraits. Then she asked the question, “What do you recognize about yourself in this photograph?” After learning how the camera worked, the participants took self-portraits in ways that showed how they perceived themselves.
Starting with a prompt from photographer Flore-Aël Surun, who draws inspiration from the shamanic practice of the totem animal, a few participants chose an animal for themselves and began to absorb their qualities and strength. They then took self-portraits that merged their images with those of their chosen animals.
