The Greek Islands, such as Kos, are the gateway to Europe for Syrian refugees. Paris Match asked the photographer Olivier Jobard to document the situation. His report, accompanied by an investigation by our correspondent Flore Olive, can be found in issue No. 3440 of Paris Match, which hit stands on Thursday, April 23rd, 2015.
Shipwrecked, but rescued. More and more Middle Eastern immigrants are crossing the Aegean Sea and landing on the Greek islands of the Dodecanese. In 2014, over 51,000 people were smuggled through the Eastern Mediterranean. Most of them fleeing the war in Syria, like 1.2 million of their compatriots, 1.2 of which are in Lebanon, a small country. In 2014, France accepted 500 of them. Greece lacks the resources to manage their arrival in such numbers. There are no provisions for children, pregnant women and the sick. In Kos, the most basic care is lacking.
