Highgate : The Persistence of Memory and Disintegration
The second solo exhibition at SLA by Brooklyn-based film photographer Kristina Juzaitis focuses on Highgate Cemetery in London as a contemplation on life, loss, grief and the eternal resurrection of nature.
Intrigued by its history of Victorian grandeur as well as its years in ruin, Juzaitis began a decade-long project to document London’s Highgate Cemetery at different times and seasons. Within this period of time, Juzaitis lost both her parents and sister; the yearly visits to shoot Highgate became a ritual of grief and a way of coming to terms with the loss of her beloved family. Recording the continual encroachment of vegetation and the passage of time destroying the grandeur of memorials reflected the impossibility of immortality and the brevity of human life.
