Julien Rocheblave : 36 Clics du Mont Fuji

Preview

For his project 36 Clics du Mont Fuji, Julien Rocheblave spent several months working in Japan, walking the surroundings of Mount Fuji, a mythical territory and visual matrix of the Japanese imagination. Inspired by the tradition of Hokusai’s Trente-six views, he explores this iconic landscape by placing his work in direct dialogue with the history of Japanese woodblock prints.

Julien Rocheblave returned to the very places depicted by Hokusai. Each photograph thus creates a conversation with the print that corresponds to it, not in a logic of reconstruction, but as a contemporary response. The viewpoint shifts, time has passed, practices have changed, but the mountain remains, a silent witness to the transformations of the territory.

Ten additional images are added to this series, echoing the so-called “additional” prints made by Hokusai. These photographs extend the project beyond Mount Fuji itself and offer a more personal reading of contemporary Japan, between the permanence of forms and the mutations of everyday life.
