JH Engström (Sweden) – Crash – Photo Phnom Penh 2018

Preview

The book Crash is based on a series of landscapes photographed close to JH Engström’s home in Smedsby, Värmland in Sweden. The collision between the hauntingly beautiful landscapes, surrounding the artist’s daily life, and the knowledge of what is happening in the ”big world” is the emotional fuel for the book Crash. Using color negatives of landscapes, close images of his body and scanned luggages he rebuilds a strange world.

« The gradual and painful insight into a decisive and violent shift. The world I grew up in is under threat. The landscapes stretch out, as beautiful and imperturbable as ever. These landscapes have met my eyes since the day I was born. I can no longer see them as before”

JH Engström was born in Karlstad, Värmland, Sweden. When he was ten, he moved with his family to Paris, and after three years went back to the countryside. But he has always returned to Paris. In 1997, he graduated from the Photography and Film Department of the University of Gothenburg. He then worked as an assistant for fashion photographer Mario Testino and documentary photographer Anders Petersen. He likes to present his work, very personal, in books. To date, he has published fifteen. He has received numerous awards and nominations, including one for the Deutsche Börse Photography Award (2005) and get the Best Picture Book of the Year Award (Arles, 2009).
