Jeu de Paume : Chantal Akerman : Travelling

Preview

The Jeu de Paume pays tribute to the Belgian filmmaker, artist and writer Chantal Akerman (Brussels 1950 – Paris 2015) through an exceptional exhibition, designed by the Palais des Beaux-Arts of Brussels (Bozar), the Chantal Akerman Foundation and CINEMATEK, and produced in collaboration with the Jeu de Paume for its presentation in Paris.

At the crossroads of cinema, art and writing, the singular voice of Chantal Akerman has never resonated as much as it does today. Her unique, self-taught sensitivity leads her to directly address themes of intimacy, solitude, mourning and social injustice, as well as family heritage and traces of history in the landscape. Among her films, Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Brussels, tops the latest ten-year list of the best films of all time established by the British Film Institute.

The “Travelling” exhibition initiates a surprising and moving journey, and describes a journey of art and life shaped by multiple geographies: from Brussels to border zones, from cuisine to the desert, from burlesque to tragedy, from the pains of the world to those of the intimate. Bringing together a selection of installations and films, some of which are being shown to the public for the first time, it convenes the “living material” which accompanies the artist’s work, revealing previously unpublished archives: scenarios, notes of intent and filming photographs.

Echoing the exhibition, this fall’s cultural program is entirely devoted to Chantal Akerman, presenting some of her films on film, as well as performances, readings and meetings.
