Jean-Luc Bargain & Le Groupement Culturel Breton : The 80s, an adolescence in Redon

Preview

Taken during the months of March and April 1982 at Beaumont college and high school in Redon, Jean-Luc Bargain‘s pictures testify to school adolescence in the early 1980s. Working as a boarding school teacher at that time in this establishment he was able, through this, to benefit from a close proximity of the observed school population.

His photographic work took place during a very specific daily space-time, namely the midday interclass, during which, after the catering service, middle and high school students dispersed in the various places of the establishment and occupied their time freely. His gaze as a photographer was therefore focused on the usual behavior of adolescents during this particular school moment.

In May 1982 a first version of this photographic research was presented to the high school CDI. She particularly insisted on the specificities of the school architecture and the ways in which adolescents inhabited it.

In 2021, almost 40 years from the initial shooting and after having studied all the images once again, Jean-Luc Bargain composed a new photographic essay. An essay highlighting this time the social interactions of adolescents inside their establishment of residence in the early 80s.
