Istanbul –Yusuf Sevincli

Preview

Elipsis Gallery is pleased to announce Yusuf Sevincli’s “Post” series, the first show of the new season, from September 28 until October 27, 2012. The show will consist of Sevincli’s most recent works from the years 2011 and 2012.

In his unorthodox black and white photographs, Sevincli unpretentiously photographs his environment, his daily encounters, his fears and concerns: simply what he experiences. His work is an expression of curiosity, a visual diary that exposes absurdity of his environment, experiences and his eventual reality.

The intimacy captured in Sevincli’s moving images allows these visual realities to strongly coexist and become a continuous narrative. The eeriness of his images awakens the most abandoned feelings and forces one to somehow discover beauty within what could be described as awkward, strange and mundane. The raw texture in his photographs surprisingly creates a nostalgic and comforting feel in contrast to his peculiar subjects. Post is the second chapter in a continuous series in which Sevincli’s focus has shifted inwards. We are invited into an exclusively intimate and close-knit circle rather than his outer surroundings we were exposed to in his previous Good Dog series.

Yusuf Sevincli was born in Zonguldak, Turkey in 1980. He studied Film & Cinema at Marmara University, Istanbul and documentary photography in Nordens Fotoskola, Stockholm. Since 2005, Sevincli’s work has been exhibited in several group shows including Istanbul Modern Museum, Photo Freo Festival, Australia, Maison de la Photographie Moscow, Thassoliniki Photo Biennial, PhotoMed, Sanary. In 2011, he was selected to participate in the international Reflexions Masterclass run by Giorgia Fioria and Gabriel Bauret. Sevincli’s first book ‘Good Dog‘ has recently been published by Filigranes Editions, 2012.
