ImageSingulières: João Pina, 46750

Preview

In 2007 in Brazil, the city of Rio de Janeiro embarked on an enormous transformation project in order to host both the FIFA Football World Cup 2014 and the Olympic Games in the summer of 2016. In Sète, the Images Singulières festival is showing the work of this photographer denouncing the excesses that resulted from it.

In 2007, when the economy was favourable due to the soaring prices of goods produced in large quantities by Brazil, the country was focused on a great investment in the sporting infrastructure, whereas the investment in public services such as housing, health, and security was minimal. In 2016, at the time when the world was watching the Olympic Games, the number of homicides went up by twenty percent and the robberies by more that forty percent according to the Rio de Janeiro Public Safety department. This is the point that concerns the photographs of Portuguese João Pina. The question that, for him, remains unanswered? Why did the price paid for the great sporting events drive the cities into bankruptcy? 46750 is a visual report of the city’s last decade, a portrait of the so-called “wonderful city”, with all its contrasts and complexities. 46750 is also the number of homicides that took place in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, an average of thirteen homicide per day in the course of the decade 2007-2016.
