ilon Art Gallery presents an exhibition by trailblazing photographer, and author Lynn Gilbert, 85, this is the story of her iconic portrait of Louise Nevelson, one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.
Art News’ stated that Gilbert’s commanding portrait of Nevelson became the symbol of the entire 2022 Venice Biennale. The past 50 years, the portrait took on a life of its own, Lynn will share the portrait’s extraordinary history.
Nevelson inspired “Particular Passions: Talks with Women Who Have Shaped Our Times”, published in 1981. Gilbert’s book is the first record of women who shaped the American Landscape. The Washington Post said her book “was revolutionary for shedding light on the accomplishments of women”.
“Women” a collection of portraits from her book “Particular Passions: Talks with Women Who Have Shaped Our Times” by Lynn Gilbert, is on view in the gallery. Included are Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Billie Jean King, Barbara Walters, and Julia Child amongst 42 others. The prints are limited-edition, signed selenium toned printed by John Delaney, master printer for Avedon and Penn.
“NYC 70’s Kids” is a collection of portraits by Lynn Gilbert, her motivation to photograph these trailblazing women was to get recognition for these portraits. The prints are vintage, hand-printed by Lynn herself, and ironically this is the first time these works are on display.
About Lynn Gilbert
Lynn Gilbert photographed areas of society that have not been photographed before. Her earliest collection “A Time Capsule of NYC ‘70s Kids,” portrays the unique individuality of children from more than 100 New York families of differing socioeconomic backgrounds.
Following Particular Passions, she spent almost ten years traveling throughout Turkey to document the interiors of the traditional homes, an important part of Turkish cultural heritage. This work is published in her book The Silk Road: Then and Now. The photographs have been exhibited numerous times and received considerable press. The last few years she has documented a world-renowned garden in New York.
Gilbert’s work is in countless books, on book covers, newspapers, magazines, film, and business reports including the MOMA, the British Museum, Netflix, and National Geographic. Her portraits are included in the National Portrait Gallery, the NY Historical Society, Vassar, Yale, and one of the finest private art collections in the world, the Richard, and Ellen Sandor Family Collection.
