A Time of Youth brings together a selection of photographs that William Gedney took in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury neighborhood between October 1966 and January 1967 while he lived amongst its counterculture communities, and which he produced with the support of a Guggenheim Fellowship that he received in 1966.
Now, fifty years after its original conception, A Time of Youth has finally been brought to print. Published by the Duke University Press, in conjunction with the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library, the book is comprised of eighty-seven of the more than two thousand photographs Gedney took which, along with pages from his personal notebooks, present a vivid portrait of both his creative process and social reflections.
