Canadian-born, Perth-based photographer Mark Lehn’s photo essay of the Bajau Laut nomads, known as the ‘sea gypsies’, captures this group that lives a stateless existence in boat dwellings in the Sabah region of Borneo.
The Bajau Laut way of life is fast disappearing, and Lehn says he was keen to record the sea gypsies before they are forced to retreat to land, driven by various factors including the political situation in the region, reduced trade opportunities and depleted fish stocks.
