Grace Coddington: The American Vogue Years

Preview

Grace Coddington’s extraordinary talent and fierce dedication to her work as creative director of Vogue have made her an international style icon. This fall Phaidon will publish Grace: The American Vogue Years a visual celebration of some of Coddington’s most memorable American Vogue shoots from the past fifteen years.

Following the fall 2015 publication of Grace: Thirty Years of Fashion at Vogue (Phaidon, £125), this highly anticipated new release features nearly 300 images by seventeen of the leading fashion photographers that Coddington has worked with since 2002. It includes a foreword by Academy Award-nominated actress Saoirse Ronan and an introduction by photographer Annie Leibovitz. Michael Roberts, former fashion editor at Vanity Fair and The New Yorker, co-art directed the book with Coddington, designed the cover, and contributed an essay.

In this stunning slipcased volume, Coddington chronicles her creative collaborations with photographers such as Steven Meisel, Annie Leibovitz, Bruce Weber, David Sims, Mert Atlas and Marcus Piggot, Craig McDean, and Steven Klein, as well as rising talents like Jamie Hawkesworth and Karim Sadli. She provides personal stories behind the elaborate shoots and anecdotes about working with the world’s best photographers, models, artists, actors, and celebrities. Coddington also reflects on the impact that the transition from film to digital has had on the medium and her creative process over the years.

Grace: The American Vogue Years demonstrates the vast range of Coddington’s work, which has been influenced by film, art, photography, and literature. This inspiration is apparent in her iconic narrative Alice in Wonderland photographed by Annie Leibovitz, in Paris during the couture, featuring Natalia Vodianova as Alice with major fashion designers in the roles of characters along Alice’s journey. Another visually striking story in the book, photographed by Peter Lindbergh, was based on Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rear Window” and stars Carolyn Murphy and Toby Maguire. She worked with David Sims to recreate the play and film “Warhorse”. The highly cinematic photographs feature the film’s leading actor, Jeremy Irvine with model Arizona Muse posed against the dramatic landscape and forbidding sky of Dartmoor, England.

In January 2016, Coddington entered a new phase of her career, becoming American Vogue’s creative director at large, which has enabled her to continue to contribute to American Vogue while also working on a number of other global projects. This past spring she launched her first perfume, Grace by Grace Coddington with Comme des Garçons. She will be releasing a limited edition set of drawings with Artspace this fall.
