Street Level Photoworks was founded in 1989. From its inception it has provided the artists and the public with the opportunity to produce and participate in photography and lens-based media. It aims to make artistic production accessible, both physically and intellectually, to a wide audience. Recognized for its integrated practice, the organization promotes the work of artists through exhibitions, commissions, residencies, and publications, an education program, community collaborations, open access facilities and training courses for the public.
Their most recent exhibition, Remote Places, Close Spaces, featured the work of three young Chinese photographers: Ren Hang, Zhang Jin and Zhang Kechun, finalists in the annual Three Shadows Photography Award (Beijing) in 2011 and 2012. The exhibition showcased their aesthetic sensibilities in addressing contemporary subjects.
