Galerie XII Paris presents its next exhibition, Phoenix, photographs by Vee Speers. It marks the start of a new collaboration with the Australian artist through a completely new series, presented from May 28 to July 17, 2021 as part of the Australia Now course.
Inspired by the legendary bird rising from its ashes, Phoenix offers portraits of women warriors – powerful and contemplative – looking to the future while thinking of the ghosts of their past.
The green backgrounds are inspired by the youth of Vee Speers in Queensland and refer to the lush and dense vegetation, mangroves and fiery sugarcane fields of northern Australia.
The exhibition will be centered on Phoenix but will also be presented images from the series The Birthday Party, Bulletproof, and Dystopia, which shed light on the long career of the Australian artist, who has been exploring human nature for more than fifteen years at through enigmatic portraits.
“Both powerful and vulnerable, my portraits are timeless symbols of the transformation between loss and rebirth. The women of Phoenix, against the backdrop of an imperfect world, are imbued with a sense of both vulnerability and great strength.” – Vee Speers
