A French photojournalist born in 1961 in Paris, Eric Bouvet began his career by boldly entering the Élysée Palace in May 1981, where he photographed Raymond Barre and Valery Giscard d’Estaing for their final cabinet meeting. Since then, he has traveled the world, covering major events and numerous conflicts.
Attentive to respecting the dignity of the people who will be seen in books and museums, his approach is close and incisive. He has been published in Time Magazine, Life Magazine, Paris-Match, Stern, The New York Times, Der Spiegel, and The Sunday Times Magazine, and has received numerous awards, including the Visa d’Or News and World Press. Eric Bouvet was a finalist for the Oskar Barnak Prize for the series “Elevations,” presented here in the Galerie VoX during the Rencontres 2024.
The series “Sex, love…” was produced from 2010 to 2014, using a 4×5 view camera with Polaroid 55 film.
Each subject was the subject of a single image, for two reasons. First, Eric Bouvet set himself a challenge: regardless of the equipment, he only released the shutter once for each scene. Second, the “legendary” Polaroid 55 film had long since been discontinued, and two years earlier, he had been able to buy a whole suitcase of the last boxes at B&H in New York. On the black market, the box was selling for €200, with no guarantee of good condition.
These people come from different backgrounds, but they all share a common interest in the world of sex. Some enjoy it, others experience it, or even use it for their work. Over time, Eric Bouvet broadened his perspective and added the word “Love” to the series’ title. The absence of captions is intentional so as not to reduce the photographed subjects to their sex lives. Eric Bouvet always seeks to preserve the integrity of those who posed for his camera.
The choice of black and white brings both an aesthetic and poetic dimension to this documentary about humanity.
