June Newton – aka Alice Springs – passed away on April 9, 2021. She would have been 100 next June.
Galerie Vallois pays tribute to her until April 29, 2023, in its space at 41 rue de Seine. The exhibition traces the life and work of June, through some forty vintage black and white photographic portraits, unique prints dating from 1947 to the 80s.
Portraitist of celebrities, Alice Springs was recognized for her ability to capture the soul of her models, delivering portraits of a rare intensity, some of which are iconic today. We find in the exhibition movie stars, including Isabelle Adjani, Hanna Schygulla, muse of Fassbinder, or Raquel Welsh, recently deceased; fashion personalities like Sonia Rykiel and Karl Lagerfeld; great photographers (Robert Mapplethorpe, David Bailey, Deborah Turbeville), but also visual artists like Niki de Saint-Phalle, Roy Lichtenstein or Gérard Garouste.
The exhibition also includes a series of crossed portraits of Helmut and June which plunge us into the intimacy of the Newton couple, revealing the attachment and the complicity which united the two photographers. We also discover images of June dating back to the 1940s and 1950s, when she was an actress.
