Chantal Regnault
With the phenomenon of “Voguing” Chantal Regnault discovered in New York between 1989 and 1992, in the city where she was already established, the rise of the “ball”. She is drawn to and curious about this parallel world that has developed in the shadow of AIDS.
She discovered a harsh marginality behind the apparent glamor which in truth is a screen for a reality of exclusion. American capitalist society was booming at the end of the 1980s and left on the wayside a population of men and women wounded by life, young people expelled from their families without training or profession, victims of racism and segregation . These excluded populations found an outlet in the glitter of dream characters with which they identified through outrageous staging against a background of disco music.
Today it is in Paris that the phenomenon is exploding.
