To coincide with the double exhibition Ames qui vivent featuring the work of Joel-Peter Witkin and Paolo Gioli at the Galerie Baudoin Lebon and the Massimo Minini gallery in Paris and Brescia, respectively, a video was produced to present the work of the two artists.
Joel-Peter Witkin… After nearly thirty years of collaborations that turned into friendship, fifteen personal exhibitions at the gallery and a few exhibitions at museums and other galleries, suddenly, a two-man show: Joel-Peter Witkin/Paolo Gioli.
Why these two? First, I must pay tribute to the major Italian gallerist in Brescia, Massimo Minini, whom I’ve known for nearly thirty years, and who came to me with this idea. Then Joel-Peter Witkin accepted the challenge. It’s a win-win situation for both artists, who are exhibiting in both places simultaneously!
Witkin and Gioli are two artists who aren’t exactly photographers. Rather, they use the medium of photography to go in different directions. Their shared concern is essentially pictorial. Photography is the medium they use for their interventions, shaping the material and working with its texture. Both communicate their love for the art world and serve as a bridge between the viewer and the collector. Together they’re fighting back against an art market that has become increasingly commercial.
