François Trézin : a Frenchman in Shanghai

Preview

François Trézin (b. 1982 in Valréas) is a young French photographer based in Shanghai since 2007. After studying graphic design and attending the École des Beaux-Arts, François studied with photographers in Paris, Sapporo and Shanghai, a period which determined his approach to the medium. Today he works for publications like The New York Times (China), GQ (China), Surface (China), Esquire (China) and ELLE Décoration (China), as well as for local advertising agencies. Endowed with an undeniable talent and a growing reputation, François’s work has already been exhibited at cultural institutions in France, China and Japan.

His work is somewhere between installation and photography, taking objects as a main subject in order to question its function and its aesthetics. His highly personal investigations blend sensitivity, spontaneity, concept and everyday items. A prolific photographer, François has already produced several personal series in addition to his commercial work, which is itself complementary and enriching.

Shanghai Parks (2008), A sculpture a day keeps doctor away (since 2009), Moins que l’infini (2010), Hubei (2010), Villa Pan (2010), Rock Speaker (2011), Frfr Bazaar (2011) and other series explore the special relationships between the object and the photographer, the object and the place. These places fraught with history allow him to reinterpret his environment and project his own world by appropriating the materials found there, or by building his own fragile and ephemeral installations.
