OH ! black…
When it comes to black, you never know where you stand. People always immediately refer you to Soulages, but that’s not what photography is about, because Soulages experiments with black in the thickness of its material and its shadows. Photography has to play more subtly in just two dimensions. So we say OH! black… because photography has to get by with this unglamorous black, and the photographer has to be ecstatic every time about the ungratefulness of what constitutes it… with white and all the greys. Fortunately… because with white, it’s a never-ending love story, a marriage renewed every morning, where the countless greys serve as witnesses to the conclusion of the encounters. But it’s not always successful, because in the brevity of the encounter, in the speed dating between Tri X and reality, the photographer has to find the balance between the obscure parts of the darkroom and the marvellous areas of light. Successful? Unsuccessful? It’s up to each and every one of us to decide whether the wedding was worth celebrating. OH ! black …
