FORMAT19: Separation by Laura Pannack

Preview

Love is one of life’s mysteries; we can relate to it and yet find it difficult to define.

Love can bring elation, it can also bring despair. Separation addresses the multitude of emotions experienced by couples since the Brexit referendum in June 2016. One half of each couple pictured is British while the other has moved to the UK from elsewhere in Europe.

The project explores the many emotions experienced by these London-based couples who, as a result of Brexit, have been forced to contemplate separation.

As Britain severs its ties with the European Union, tens of thousands of people will face the loss of their automatic right to work or right to stay in the UK. A country and home they share with their partner, loved one.

Brexit has been discussed for its political and economic implications, but what does it mean for love and what impact will have on the lives of people about to be separated as they lose their right to stay in the country they have fallen in love in?
