The Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson presents Alessandra Sanguinetti: The Adventures of Guille and Belinda.
Alessandra Sanguinetti (born 1968) grew up and studied in Argentina. In 1999, she noticed two unique children, Guillermina Aranciaga and Belinda Stutz. These two women, whose destiny she has followed ever since, have established themselves as icons at the centers of her life and work. With the Argentinian countryside as a backdrop, in an essentially masculine universe made up of gauchos and farmers, the documentary pictures she creates show the stages of life and question the irreversibility of time.
With the help of these two cousins and by using staging and props, Alessandra Sanguinetti creates a dialogue between her photographs and her models in a resolutely phantasmagorical world. Like Morpheus holding a mirror in one hand and offering the power of dreams with the other, she paradoxically transports us into the illusion of dreams and into the representation of the reality of these souls who were, in the beginning, only points on the horizon.
With the creation of these dreamlike and psychoanalytic pictures, Alessandra Sanguinetti provides a sensitive response to the perpetual questioning of the relationship of artists to their subjects. Within and outside of this series, these three women, Guillermina, Belinda and Alessandra, ultimately form another family.
The Adventures of Guille and Belinda deserves constant updating. This series exhibited at the Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles in 2006, then at the BAL in Paris in 2011, is presented from January 30th to May 19th, 2024 at the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation, in an expanded and updated set of 52 photographs and 3 films.
This project is rich in what it is and what it will be: yesterday, today and tomorrow.
