Flow Photographic Gallery presents the first ever exhibition of Deanna Dikeman’s breakout series of images. Leaving and Waving, published by European photographic publishing house, Chose Commune, is one of the most important and best-selling photography books of of recent years.
Over a preriod of 27 years Dikeman photographed her parents every time she visited and parted from them. The original book contains 66 images from this period. Flow Photographic Gallery is exhibiting one image from every one of Dikeman’s 93 visits to her parents home in the heart of the American Midwest.
Dikeman’s images rival any durational series of photographs of the family made at any time. It is a body of work of searing beauty and unerring emotional tension. The years roll past as the bond between parents and child becomes ever more desperately charged. Not since Nicholas Nixon’s series of portraits of the ‘Brown Sisters’ has a single body of photographs commented so articulately on the nature of time, the body and the heart.
