During the 2020 lockdowns, Karni Arieli began photographing her children. She noticed that many other women were doing the same with their own children. This gave her the idea to compile these stories. In April 2021, she launched Eye Mama Project, an Instagram page where she posts photos about motherhood taken by mothers from all over the world.
“I wanted to represent all cultures, ethnicities, sexual orientations—including people who have lost a child, those who foster or adopt children, those who had a child through IVF, single parents, divorced parents, all facets of motherhood.”
Since launching the page, Karni Arieli has received more than 20,000 submissions from some 40 countries. Yet, Instagram briefly suspended her account, likely due to nudity. “Motherhood and breastfeeding are often censored,” she says, further motivating her to highlight these universally intimate moments.
