Women house is the first in a series of thematic exhibitions designed to rewrite the history of 20th-century women artists. The exhibition embraces the historical principles of the first generation of feminist artists in the 1960s and 70s, addressing issues related to the daily rituals of domestic life and contemporary living spaces, and looks at how artists deal with questions of scale and preserve the memory of buildings destined for destruction and oblivion.
The name Women House is a tribute to the exhibition Woman house, organised in 1972 by Miriam Schapiro and Judy Chicago, co-founders of the new California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) Feminist Art Program. A turning point for feminist art, that initiative defined the overarching themes that feminism was to tackle over the next forty years, whilst confronting women artists, both physically and psychologically, with the limits and freedoms of space.
This exhibition brings together more than 40 women international artists from several continents, including many photographers such as: Claude Cahun, Birgit Jürgenssen, Cindy Sherman, Karin Mac, Helena Almeida, Zanele Muholi, Kirsten Justesen, Francesca Woodman, Laurie Simmons, Sue Williamson …
Curated by Camille Morineau, Director of Exhibitions and Collections, and Lucia Pesapane, Exhibition Curator at Monnaie de Paris.
A collective exhibition of women artists organised by Monnaie de Paris in partnership with the National Museum of Women in the Arts of Washington D.C.
