The words of the artistic directors
The Prix Levallois 2019 confirms its international status with 670 candidates from 77 countries (France 278, Russia 68, Iran 50, Italy 21 …) with almost perfect parity!
After examining more than 10,000 photographs, we chose 15 photographers (8 women, 7 men). They come from different countries: France (3), Russia (3), Italy (2), Iran (2), India (1), Mexico (1), Costa Rica (1), Belgium (1) and the United Kingdom (1).
As for the 2018 selection, we were very attentive to respect the main trends of the files received. This year confirms the domination of the documentary with sometimes the feeling that only the subject counts – as if it were self-sufficient!
But also many portraits and self-portraits, still lifes, landscapes, bodies in nature, environmental subjects and as always the strong presence of black and white.
For us photography is a writing of the world, but not the anecdotal recording of it. Our choice was to retain candidates who do not give in to the temptation of imagery and who propose real photographic stakes, as much in the engagement and reflection of the topics as in the quality of the conceptual and plastic writing.
It’s your turn to discover this selection that we hope will be qualitative and invigorating!
