The Jewish Museum Vienna presents The Eye of Brazil: Kurt Klagsbrunn, an exhibition curated by Andrea Winklbauer.
The photographer Kurt Klagsbrunn, born in Vienna in 1918 and deceased in Rio de Janeiro in 2005, captured modern life in Brazil from 1939 until the 1970s, where he produced fashion, lifestyle, and industrial photographs and documented the development of this country and the building of its new capital Brasilia.
In 2017, his nephew Victor Klagsbrunn, who managed the photographer’s estate, including over 250,000 negatives, donated some letters, notes, photos, and other mementos of the life of the Klagsbrunn family in Floridsdorf and their escape to Rio—to the Jewish Museum Vienna.
The exhibition presents this donation and a selection of Kurt Klagsbrunn’s works from exile in Brazil.
