“An American in Paris”… American collector and dealer Alex Novak, active on the international scene for nearly 50 years, has decided to end his career. He has chosen expert Christophe Goeury and MILLON to present his exceptional collection at auction on Friday, November 8, 2024, at 2 p.m.
Over 300 lots, representing the history of photography from 1840 to 1940, will be offered during the international event Paris Photo.
A photographer turned collector and dealer in the 1990s, Alex Novak has always had a particular interest in “primitive” photographers: Charles Nègre, Alphonse De Launay, Giroux, John Beasley Greene, Gustave Le Gray, Henri Le Secq…
Over time, this passionate scholar enriched his collection with works from avant-garde photographers whose images are now highly sought after by collectors: Man Ray, André Kertész, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Jacques Henri Lartigue…
A man of his time, Alex Novak is the founder and creator of i-Photo Central and Vintage Works, two reference websites. i-Photo Central is a comprehensive encyclopedia offering thousands of web pages for collectors, curators, and photography historians, while Vintage Works is its “dealer” counterpart. He is a member of the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) and was previously part of the Daguerreian Society and the American Photographic Historical Society.
Additionally, Alex Novak writes articles and columns for The Photograph Collector, Focus magazine, The Daguerreian Society Newsletter, and is often sought for his expertise by Photographie Internationale, Photo District News (PDN), Black & White magazine, and Photography New York. He is also the author and editor of the E-Photo Newsletter, an essential digital bulletin shared with thousands of contacts.
As a writer, editor, photographer, collector, and renowned dealer, Alex Novak has spent his life searching, investigating, discovering, and shedding light on photographic marvels. Now, he presents his treasures, eager to share and pass on his photographic heritage.
