Stories From China
My project is a personal travelogue through the huge Chinese cities on the consequences of unbridled economic development on individuals, the alienation and loneliness that can be felt in the vastness of these cities.
Once predominantly rural, China has become an urban country and 60% of the population now lives in cities. Existing cities have grown at a breakneck pace since the early 2000s and others have sprung up where there was nothing. Millions of people from the rural poor have settled there, leaving family and friends behind.
Even though its megacities bustle with activity day and night, the feeling of isolation remains for many Chinese far from their loved ones.
