Eugène Atget la photographie des hommes libres by Yannick Le Marec, published by Editions Loco. This book is a little gem.

We know very little about the life of Eugène Atget. Yannick Le Marec analyzed the photographer’s output (thousands of photographs) taken between 1890 and 1920, as well as all of his archives bequeathed to the BNF after his death (particularly press clippings and political newspapers). This is a new approach that tells us a little more about this photographer, including his strong political commitments close to the anarchist circles of the time. The author focuses particularly on his photographic work around the Zone, the geographical area between the fortifications and the suburbs, a 300-meter-wide ring surrounding Paris beyond the abandoned Thiers fortifications. It was in this zone that rag-and-bone men gathered to live and sort their loot.
