Éditions Hermann : Émile Zola and photography. A page of love

Preview

Release by Editions Hermann of the work Émile Zola et la photographie. Une page d’amour in partnership with the Médiathèque du Patrimoine et de la Photographie.

We know Émile Zola as a writer, journalist, committed intellectual, but the man of letters is also a man of images. Long attracted to photography, he devoted himself to it passionately at the end of his life: this facet of his creativity deserves to be revisited.

These years of practice coincide with major upheavals in Zola’s life: love for Jeanne and the birth of their children Denise and Jacques, maintaining a married life with Alexandrine, involvement in the Dreyfus affair, exile. His photographs, often very intimate, bear witness to an existence captured and delivered on the spot. His practice goes beyond that of a simple amateur to gesture towards both artistic composition and autobiographical revelation.
