The 2014 edition of photo l.a. will honor award-winning celebrity photographer Douglas Kirkland. On Thursday evening, January 16, 2014, Kirkland will be presented with a certificate from the City of Los Angeles, followed by a presentation of the photo l.a. award.
Stephen Cohen, Founder and Director of photo l.a., observes, “I’ve known Douglas Kirkland before I knew Douglas Kirkland having seen so much of his photography in publications. In 2003 my gallery was fortunate enough to have exhibited his then re-discovered ‘One Night With Marilyn’ body of work. To say he is an iconic figure in photography, and celebrity portraiture, is putting it mildly. The images we have in our heads of many major film stars are the images he’s taken. He is a beloved figure to a huge family of family members, friends, peers and clients. He has been the exclusive still photographer on all of Baz Luhrman’s films since Moulin Rouge. While Baz Luhrman is known for his cutting edge visual style, he recognizes in Douglas the ‘old school’ qualities of solid professionalism and an always interested eye.”
Cohen continues, “He is remarkably active even in his 80th year, working assignments and making videos. In fact he is leaving right after his keynote speech at photo l.a. for South America to work on a new film, THE 33 directed by Patricia Riggen with Antonio Banderas and Juliette Binoche. It is photo l.a.’s honor, and pleasure, to present Douglas Kirkland with our Lifetime Achievement Award even though his life of producing wonderful imagery continues.”
Kirkland will be exhibiting forty photographs at photo l.a. including iconic images of Julie Andrews in “The Sound of Music”, the historic 1981 launch of space shuttle Columbia, as well as portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Judy Garland, Catherine Deneuve, Charlie Chaplin, Orson Welles, Sean Connery, Jack Nicholson, and Joel Grey, among others. He will also be signing copies of his six-decade career retrospective, A Life In Pictures (Glitterati Incorporated) on Saturday, January 18, from 1:30-3:00pm.
Douglas Kirkland observes, “I have lived a life time of love of photography and it is extremely meaningful to me when my peers give the recognition I feel I am receiving with being honored at photo l.a. I want to thank you all very much and I can assure you I will continue to learn and take pictures as long as I can hold a camera. A special thank you to Stephen Cohen and Claudia Bartlett for organizing this wonderful event.”
