Photography is Magic !, curated by Charlotte Cotton, is the main exhibition of the 2012 Daegu Photo Biennale. The title of the exhibition refers to the experimental possibilities of photography. The magic lies in the development of the image and the knowledge it requires, as well as in the areas left to chance and transformation.
The exhibition features the work of 29 international artists, who all offer their take on the potential of contemporary photography. While today’s photographic practice occurs mainly on computer screens, these artists work on the physical and material aspects of prints. Their work encourages viewers to remember and imagine the original qualities of the medium in new ways. All of their work provides an innovative and imaginative response to the recurring questions: What characteristics of photography persist in the digital age? And what are its new properties?
