Stéphane Fedorowsky, one of l’Éléphant’s favorites

Preview

Stéphane Fedorowsky was born in 1979. He lives and works in Paris producing work that is both intense and ambiguous at the boundaries of painting and photography. The darkroom becomes his favoured creative space. Beyond taking the shot, the creative act takes its full meaning at the time of processing. Using techniques such as solarisation, superimposition, double-exposure and rayography, each of his images is transformed to become a unique print.

What is a photograph?

The projection of the eye on the world.

What does surrealism evoke for you?

Surrealism is to life what dreams and unconsciousness are to the mind.

What do you look for when taking a photo?

To create a moment when the model and the elements come together to capture a fleeting instant. ““Concealed in each of us is another person, a person of a moment.”

Why do you use analogue?

Analogue demands manipulation, it shapes the image; it’s like an additional dimension, contrary to digital that remains insubstantial.

The darkroom is primordial as much for the ingredients added at the instant of development as for coming face to face with oneself under the red light.

What is reality?

Material to transform, to enhance.

What equipment do you use?

A Pentax 645 / 4.5 x 6; a Hasselblad 500 / 6 x 6; a Mamiya RZ67 / 6 x 7.

What predominates in your creations, the shooting or the processing afterwards?

The two are inseparable in the creation of an image.

What historic character would you have liked to photograph? Why?

Farinelli for his baroque and theatrical side.
