Sandro Sardoz was born in Pula, Croatia in 1967. His passion for photography began during his childhood. For many years, he photographed and developed his own photographs. Then he turned to film, mainly short film. It was only in the 1990s with the first appearance of digital photography that Sandro Sardoz returned to his “first love”. It was also at this moment that he started to work on self-portraits, or the staging of  alter-egos in abandoned places.

Where do you live?

In Pula, Croatia.

Why self-portraits?

Because I am fully in charge of the shot, from the  conception , the acting, to the photography. I have the feeling that I can completely control my creation.

How do you imagine the world of tomorrow?

I’m not sure if I can or want to answer that question.

Today’s world?

I don’t see it as beautiful. And each time that I turn on the television, that’s confirmed.

Yesterday’s?

We always say that yesterday “was better”…

What is photography?

A window to the world. It’s a composition and/or an emphasis of emotions.

What do you dream of?

I often have nightmares. My dreams wake me up.

Why photograph abandoned places?

I have a solitary nature. I’m attracted to abandoned places. I like the deserted side of things, being able to imagine what was there before, when it was inhabited.

Where is the “other”?

In my photographs, it’s embodied in the projection that I stage.
