What does the future hold for fashion photography? Is it likely to become moving images on a screen? Although the links between photography and cinema have always existed and certain photographers have chosen at some point or other in their career to concentrate on film – as William Klein did in the 1960s – more and more fashion photographers are trying their hand at video. In 2000, Nick Knight launched the online fashion channel SHOWstudio.com, with its emphasis on live video broadcasts. Other photographers are drawn to the moving image because it allows them to develop a new style language based on movement and rhythm. And the Internet can boost the impact of a glossy magazine: Style.com, an online site for fashion news and information, was not conceived for the purpose of selling but in order to launch the Condé Nast group into the future. Video opens up new perspectives in a saturated magazine market and Vogue.TV is thus seen today as a natural extension of the magazine. The new generation of photographers have no difficulty switching between the fixed and the moving image, given that the kind of camera they use offers the possibility of working in both formats.
