Fanny Sudre-Bernard and Julie Sudre

Prints, unique pieces by Jean-Pierre Sudre, from the Sixties some of which were exhibited in 1967 at MoMA in New York. Photographs by Brassaï, printed by Claudine Sudre in 1967. Transmutations and large format prints. Pictures of their photographic friends, Bill Brandt, Alvarez Bravo, Jerry Ueslmann … Twenty-five prints from the mid-1960s to 1970s are on offer, as well as works by Bill Brandt and Brassaï – with the complete set of Transmutations (one of two sets in 28 x 24 cm, consisting in 12 silver gelatin prints printed in 1967 by Claudine Sudre, estimated at € 20,000-30,000) – in the continuity of the sale of the couple’s library on November 30, 2013.

Technician perfectionist and pedagogue, Jean-Pierre Sudre made his debut as a laboratory assistant and reporter at the newspaper Le Journal on the eve of the Second World War, then became assistant director. Photographer in 1949, he made a specialty of woodland scenes and still lifes. From the 1960s, he experimented with new processes and discovered the crystallization of silver salts on a glass plate, which he used as a negative. Drawing on the techniques of the nineteenth century, he refined his and carried out transfers, integrations of plants and insects, to create abstraction and the game of forms through a mineral world. His repertoire is unlimited. His random and dreamlike landscapes, sublimated by color, are consecrated in 1967 by an exhibition at MoMA in New York. Many of these unique pieces are now on their way to the auction house . If we know families of painters, those of photographers are more rare. In 2010, the Musée de l’Hospice Saint-Roch in Issoudun paid tribute to them with the exhibition Les Sudre. A family of photographers. Around the patriarch Jean-Pierre, you could see his son Dominique, landscape photographer, his daughter-in-law, talented portraitist, his son-in-law, photographer of ancient monuments and museum storage aréa, and of course his wife, Claudine, magician of the dark room, which left unforgettable prints of the pioneers – Le Secq, Nadar, Atget, Marey, Bayard, Fox or Talbot.

The works of Jean-Pierre Sudre are estimated from 1,500 to 6,000 €.
