Circulation(s) : Giulia Frigieri : Generazione Vulcano

Preview

The Circulation(s) festival opens its fifteenth year at Le Centquatre and runs until 1 June 2025. Among the artists on show, Giulia Frigieri has been following teenagers living in the shadow of the Vulcano and Stromboli volcanoes on the Aeolian Islands since 2021.

“Unpredictable, restless and impulsive are adjectives that describe both adolescence and an active volcanoes. Can the incandescence of youth and the unpredictability of a volcanic eruption work together?

Since 2021, Giulia Frigieri has been photographing young people on the volcanic islands of Sicily’s Aeolian archipelago, looking at how to visually represent this symbolic cohabitation. Generazione Vulcano is a project that seeks to illustrate the most complex moment in life, adolescence, in a specific geographical context. It shows the freedom with which young people embrace life despite the uncertainty of events, in opposition to the scientific gaze and its need to monitor, control and tame the unpredictability of eruptions, all in a climate of palpable tension.

Generazione Vulcano was supported by Amaneï in Salina, The Possibile Island in Vulcano, the Volcanology team at the University of Clermont Auvergne and the Laboratorio Geofisica Sperimentale of the Earth Sciences Department at the University of Florence”.
